Reality Finally Forces Trump To Bend To Its Will

Donald Trump has lived in a solipsistic bubble of his own creation, a narcissistic virtual reality, most of his life. He even denies science, the hardest of hard truths, reality at its most certain, when it comes to global warming.

But apparently his "genius" mind has met its match in medical science, epidemiology, and the modeling of disease spread. (Climate change models are just bunk, however, according to Republicans.)

Trump spent the first few months of the coronavirus pandemic spewing fatuous guff claiming everything was fine and he and his bureaucratic lackeys and sycophants were doing a great job, as always. He announced that all would be well by Easter (early April) and the economy would get back to normal.

"Everything looks sunny to ME!

But apparently the data- the numbers- wore him down. Trump in his career as a real estate hustler, bank and investor defrauder, and overall scammer and grifter, has needed to be able to grasp numbers to pull off his con jobs. So numbers he understands.

And the numbers on the spread of coronavirus, and the piling up of dead bodies, are grim and set to get much grimmer, Possibly much, much grimmer. This has caused a noticeable change in Trump's tone during his press performances. He's had to admit that things are actually bad, and set to get worse. He was forced to alter his Back-To-Normal timetable to the end of April. (Still far too optimistic.)

"Reality- what a bummer! What did I do to deserve this?"

Even though he brays that he's the World's Greatest Expert on just about everything (rather like his North Korean counterpart, with whom he has had an on again off again bromance with), he's not too proud to turn to experts to advise him on what to do. Amazingly, some of these experts, like Fauci and Birx, medical professionals, have even been allowed to speak at length during Trump's press appearances. The fact that he is willing to risk being upstaged is perhaps a sign of his desperation.

Two of the main props on which Trump was basing his reelection- the raging bull stock market and the "good" economy, have now both come crashing down big time. We hardly ever hear about The Wall anymore- maybe Trump felt he'd worn out that shtick- and he never did lock up Hillary Clinton (who actually deserves to be executed for her crimes against humanity, forget about hiding the email record of her activities as Barack "The Drone Assassin" Obama's Secretary of State in a private, secret computer server- so what does Trump have to run on? His mediocre performance dealing with the covid-19 pandemic. (The disease caused by the coronavirus- an acronym for coronavirus 2019.)\

What has totally absorbed not just the media's attention, but the populace's too- as already about a third are forced to stay at home deprived of income-- is this menacing microorganism that is relentlessly spreading disease and death to an mushrooming number of people. And Trump is ill-equipped personally to rise to the occasion. (Contrast his performance with those of New York State governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City mayor Bill de Blasio, neither of whom I have any use for otherwise, but they're doing the job, providing leadership both in action and in addressing the public daily.)

"OH GOD NO DON'T LET THIS VIRUS COST ME MY REELECTION!!"

But the odds are that Trump will win regardless. Joe Biden is a horrible politicians and a fatally vulnerable candidate. And amazingly, in polls, the majority approve of the job he's doing in the pandemic!! Even though, for just one example, he's currently hoarding 10,000 ventilators, necessary to try and save the lives of critically ill patients, even though Cuomo and de Blasio have been publicly pleading for weeks for more ventilators, and 3,000 are needed in New York City next week. When questioned about the hoarded ventilators by a reporter, Trump responded that he need to have "flexibility" as to where to send them. (Translation: screw states that aren't voting for him.)

How could anyone be impressed by the job this lifelong grifter and ripoff artist is handling this crisis? The hopelessness of changing the U.S. for the better ultimately lies in the fact that a majority are cretins and many of those are racists and reactionaries.
